Naughty or Nice List Video: Santa Checks the List by Name

A naughty or nice list video is the moment children hold their breath for — Santa opens the book, runs his finger down the page, and finds their name. Personalize it in minutes, and rest assured the verdict is always a kind one.

The moment they hold their breath

There is a specific two seconds in a naughty or nice list video that nothing else in Christmas quite matches. Santa opens the book. He runs his finger down the page. He finds the name. And in the gap before he says which list it’s on, every child in the room goes completely silent.

That pause is the whole product. Everything else — the ledger, the ribbon marker, the reading glasses, the fire — exists to make those two seconds land.

What happens in the video

Santa opens the book

A heavy leather ledger on the desk, red ribbon marker, brass pen. He puts his glasses on. This is not rushed.

He looks for their name

By name, out loud, with their town if you’ve given it. He turns a page. He checks twice.

He finds it

On the nice list. He mentions why — the thing they worked at, the kindness, the year they’ve had.

And one gentle note

Optional, and always affectionate. Bedtimes. Sharing. Getting dressed on the first ask. Never a threat.

Why the verdict is always nice

The obvious version of this product is a stick. Santa finds the name on the naughty list, looks disappointed, and says he’ll be watching. It would probably sell, and we don’t make it.

Three reasons, and the third is the one that matters:

  • It doesn’t work. Behaviour that improves under threat improves until the threat expires, which in this case is December 26th.
  • It lands harder than parents expect. A four-year-old told by Santa himself that they are on the naughty list does not hear a joke. Several of the reviews we’ve read of other services are from parents who found this out.
  • You’re going to rewatch it. These videos get kept. In six years you will not want the one where a stranger in a red coat told your child they weren’t good enough.

Santa can still notice things. A gentle, affectionate word about the thing they’re working on is far more effective than a verdict, and it is what children actually respond to — being seen, not being graded. You write that line yourself, and you can leave it out.

You see every word of the script before anything is generated, and you can change any of it. Nothing goes into a video for your child that you haven’t read.

Making the pause work

A few things families tell us make the difference:

  • Watch it together. The reaction is a group event. Playing it on a phone handed to one child loses most of it.
  • Don’t narrate. The urge to fill the pause is strong. Resist it — the silence is the point.
  • Give Santa one specific thing. “Being kind to your little brother when he was poorly in October” beats “being good” by a distance.
  • Film them, not the screen. Point the camera at the child. You already know what the video says.

Questions

Can Santa put my child on the naughty list?

No. The verdict is always the nice list. Santa can gently mention something they’re working on if you want him to, but he will not tell a child they have been bad, and that is a deliberate decision rather than a limitation.

Is the naughty or nice list video free?

This one is the paid video — the list, the book and the full personalization. The free options are a short cartoon Santa message and a printable letter, both of which will use your child’s name.

Can Santa mention something specific they did?

Yes, and it is what makes the video work. One specific thing — a kindness, a badge, a hard term at school — is worth more than any amount of general praise.

Can I check what he’s going to say first?

You see the full script before anything is generated and you can edit every line of it. Nothing reaches your child that you have not read and approved.

What age is this best for?

Four to eight is where the pause has the most effect. Younger children enjoy hearing their name; older ones are more interested in what Santa knows about their year than in the verdict itself.

Can siblings be in the same video?

Yes — Santa can find both names in the book. Many families still make one each, because the pause works better when a child is waiting for their own name alone.

Make this the Christmas they remember

Add your child’s name, their age and the one thing they asked for, and Santa will do the rest — recorded by the fire, ready in minutes, and yours to keep for good.
